December 19, 2008

I started writing this on Monday because I forgot a few things last week.....and a lot has happened this week.  I have decided (I am the boss after all!) to offer our customers a Christmas break.....For your last minute shopping get 15% off until December 23.  Carol set out a table of "Santa Suggests.... " ideas that will help family and friends if you send them in for a few stocking stuffers.  We will also do a Gift Certificate in any amount.

Shop: We have had a wonderful few weeks with all the new fabrics coming in.  This week we received new polar fleeces.  These will be perfect for the KidSew Christmas Sew Camp.  We also received nice single knits in solids and prints and some jacket weight woven fabrics.  Need something special for the Holidays?  We received 1 bolt of black knit with "sparkles".

We are still expecting 3 fabric orders in before Christmas... .where are we going to put it all?

The long awaited Kwik Sew order came in and we have an almost full cabinet.

I love the Clover Silk Pins!  That's why we put them in our beginner sewing kits.  They are the best to use for young and old sewers.  Very sharp and the heads don't melt when you press them!  I have ordered a whole pile....they are in and will make a great stocking stuffer.    We also have in the Clover Magnetic Pin Caddy (pink, green and purple).  The strong magnet grabs the pins and the lid stays secure while on the go.

The Burda magazines came be in this week.  There are some lovely patterns for winter sewing.  As one customer said when I called her....."I just love looking at the pictures!".

Mail Order....you can now place an order and we'll mail it out to you.  We'll be starting with the Kwik Sew patterns.  Call the store and we'll put your pattern order in the mail within 24 hours.  No postage charges for the next little while.  We'll grow to include notions and a selection of fabrics.  Let your friends know who live outside the Calgary area that we will mail Kwik Sew patterns to them.  Apparently, no one in Edmonton sells the whole line.

  • KidSew Pre-Christmas: We have limited spaces in the Monday afternoon (4-6pm) class on the 22nd.  We have been asked to offer more time...so, we'll do a 2-4pm class if your child just has to sew something more for Christmas.  Call the store to register.
  • There are some spaces left in the Christmas Sew camp.   The children will be making a fleece jacket and using their creativity to design and embellish.  Check the web site for full details.
  • Beginner Serger: Learn to thread your serger and adjust the stitches with confidence.  We'll explore the variety of stitches and techniques we can do with our sergers.  Great for those who have new sergers, are looking to buy a serger (we have a couple we can rent) and those who haven't used theirs in a while.

Either way, give it a winter vacation and have it serviced.  Especially in our dry climate, our machines should be serviced and lubricated on a regular basis.  Be nice to your serger and it will last you a long time.  Book your serger in by December 31 and pick it up January 5th.  Cost is $80 plus parts.  Our technician (Jerry) will be here Friday (and Saturday if needed) to work on your machines.  Sewing machines are welcome too!

THEY ARRIVED, THEY ARRIVED!!!!   Ok, I know I get excited, but it's like Christmas every day/week.  We received some quilting cottons and batiks on Saturday as well as a few fun flannels.  The long awaited fashion fabrics have arrived.  These new fashion fabrics are poly/rayon/spandex and rayon/spandex knits.  Beautiful drape for some really lovely dresses or tops.  Poly/rayon/spandex wovens that would be lovely in pants or skirts.  We also received some 100% polyester wovens that would sew up into dresses, skirts and pants.  So, now we need to re-arrange AGAIN.  All our new inventory is 20% off.  We have put up a few signs so that you can see what is new.

We have also set up a table at the front of the store for some winter clearance fabrics.  These are priced at 30-50% off.

I tried to keep this one short and sweet!   Have a great week sewing...... what else can we do with all this snow!!!!!!

    December 2, 2008

I missed sending out the update last weekend....got that terrible cold and ended going home mid day on a couple of days.  My head was full and I couldn`t think straight.  Thanks, dear husband for being so generous and sharing!!!!!  Seriously, we are both on the mend and feeling much better.

I`ve had a couple of sales rep visits in the past week and don`t ask me what I ordered last week!!!!!  But I know I did order more fashion fabrics as well as quilting cottons.  Yesterday, I ordered some organic cotton knits and a bamboo interlock as well as some lovely batiks that should be in at the end of January....that will give us something to look forward to in the winter doldrums.  We received a new roll of the Hobbs Heirloom Cotton Polyester batting.  I just love this stuff and I think you do too.  We often run out of it....so I have another roll on hold with the distributor that they`ll send out as soon as we need it.

I am waiting (quite impatiently now) for some fashion fabrics to arrive.  These are goods from Manufacturers. ..what that means is that it may be stuff you saw last season on the racks in the stores.  So, when a manufacture orders 1000s of meters of a polyester rayon knit and only uses 900 meters....the remained are sold to us.  We are expecting some nice polyester rayon knits as well as some pant weight woven fabrics.

Christmas is just around the corner and we have planned two adult classes to help you make a few gifts for friends or family
    • Bags, Bags & More Bags: Turn a busy Saturday of shopping into a creative afternoon and make a bag for someone special (maybe even yourself).  We have found a number of easy (yet stylish) bag patterns to chose from and we will guide you as you sew.  Learn some neat tricks for starting and finishing your bags....ways to embellish and ways to modify to suit your needs.  Saturday, December 6; 2-5pm
    • Create a Scarf: Need a quick, simple and inexpensive gift for someone special?  Join us for an afternoon of creative stitching.  Bring scraps of fabrics and threads and create a one-of-a-kind scarf.  Tuesday, December 9; 6:30-9:30pm
KidSew Classes: Our monthly classes are now done and we have scheduled single classes so that your child can come and sew something special for a teacher, grandparent or parent for Christmas.  Classes are 2 hours in length and the projects are all priced at $10 each.  There are spaces in our afternoon classes (4-6pm) as well as some of our daytime (Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings) classes.  If you have a child who is interested in sewing, but you don`t want to invest in a full month, these December classes would be perfect.  Call the store for more details.

Check the web site for our KidSew new year schedule.  Don`t delay, some classes are filling up and we will strictly adhere to the policy of 6 students maximum in a class!  We have set dates, but don`t have projects yet for the Spring Camps.

Stash Buster Events: Check the web site for information about our Stash Buster Events.  Everyone has a stash of quilting fabrics and feels guilty buying new fabrics.  We`re here to help.  We have scheduled 6 events for the last Friday night of each month (January - June).

We are still working on the Adult class schedule for the New Year.  We are also looking for more instructors.  Give us a call with your ideas for classes that you would like to teach....or like to take.....we are looking for someone to teach classes in outer wear (parkas, wind suits, etc).

Have a great week sewing....don` t forget our Fun Fridays (4pm-9pm).  You can come to sew on Christmas projects and not be bothered by any little elves peeking!

    November 15, 2008

This was our Happy Birthday Week.  We celebrated our 3rd anniversary at Needleworks, Jerry had a birthday (no guessing how old) and Liz is now a quarter century old!!!!  I feel OLD having a really grown up daughter and husband in his 50s!!!!.  We had the best birthday cake from Marble Slab at Market Mall.  We all would recommend the black cherry ice cream.

KIDSEW CLASSES: I can't express my excitement and pleasure each day as our young sewers come in.  They are always so excited and eager to get going on their projects.  We had 4 new boys start sewing this month as well as a couple of new girls.  The demand is growing and I am getting worried that I won't be able to have enough spaces for everyone.   I find that I can teach 6 children comfortably and effectively in a class.  If we add even one more body.....I somehow feel out of control.  I want to be able to have hands-on contact with each child during each class.   I would really love to find someone to come on board to help us with the KidSew classes....so the search continues for someone to come in and learn about our KidSew Program, loves children and sewing and wants to help us out.  Contact the store if you are interested in teaching some KidSew classes.

Christmas is coming and we have the gift project samples on display. To make things easier, we have priced the kits at $10 including GST.  So, your child can come in and make a special gift and keeping it a secret too.  We will do our best to guide your child in the most appropriate fabric choices and projects. Contact us if you have any concerns or comments.

If I can get to my sewing machine this weekend, I will finish and display the sample jacket for the Christmas camp.  The project is a Magic/Bog coat.  The children will start with a rectangle of fleece fabric and embellish (appliques, thread, stitches), then cut and sew the jacket.

We have started to schedule our January and February classes.  I need to check on school holidays and classroom availability and we'll fill the schedule in the next week or so.  I don't expect the schedule to change much.  Our homeschool classes will run 10am - 12 noon, after school classes 4-6pm and Saturdays 9-11 and 11am-1pm.  If you have any comments or questions regarding our new format (2 hour classes), please let us know.

ADULT SEW CLASSES:  We are starting to work on the new year schedule.  Let us know what you are interested in learning so that we schedule our classes to meet your needs. The following are what we have planned for the next few months.

    October 14, 2008

A happy post Thanksgiving and successful Election Day to everyone!!!!

We ran away to Winnipeg for the weekend to help my mum celebrate a big birthday.  Jerry and I cooked dinner in my sister’s kitchen.  Considering a new-to-us stove, pots and tools, we did a decent job.  ALL the family except one granddaughter was able to make it for the weekend.  Stephanie is still in Africa and will be home in November

The front of the store (outside) looks terrible, but we hope this will not last too long.  Our big sign has been taken down, but we are getting new stucco and the landlord is working hard to keep a fresh face on the building.  Bare with us as we deal with outside scaffolding…..but I am sure it will be worth the wait and hassle.

We have been busy receiving quilting and fashion fabrics…..new in are a half dozen batiks…..I LOVE THEM; lovely oriental prints; juvenile cottons and flannels; denim, home dec jacquards, knits and silks.  The fashion fabrics are from a new supplier.  We thought we would order a selection to see how we (and you) like them.

Our KidSew classes have been going well.  Most are full.  We set monthly dates and these have proved a good thing for all of us.  Families can now plan on a monthly basis for their class days and times.   We have single days in December….book to sew a Christmas gift or plan for a few extra days of sewing.

Kwik Sew patterns are going up November 1, 2008.  We have been trying to keep the prices stable the last little while, but we will be receiving new price stickers for the pattern cabinets….so, we will up our prices when they come in.  Pick up the patterns or the KwikSew books while the prices are still good…..not that they are going to go up a lot, but KwikSew are a bit more expensive than the other North American pattern companies and you’ll notice the price difference.  A reminder that KwikSew patterns are all multi sized, printed on good quality paper with clear detailed sewing instructions. They are drafted on realistic body measurements and they fit well The have also put our a great measuring and alteration booklet.  Pick yours up today.

I’ll update the newsletter this week….missed the beginning of October, but the dates are still ok for many of our classes.  If you want a class scheduled, call us or email with your preferences.

Classes starting soon----check the web site for full details.

Jerry and I dropped in this afternoon to unload our car and put some of the display items away from the Creative Stitches Show.  It was a long weekend, but I think we accomplished our goals…..hand out all our brochures, sell Kwik Sew patterns and take class registrations.  The hardest part about these weekends is the constant standing still on concrete.  At the store I am always moving…..I very rarely stand still.   I will head home soon to put up my still achey toes.

We sold out of the Burda patterns that we took to the show……we have ordered more and they should have been in last Thursday….hopefully on Monday.

Huge thanks go out to Liz, Arla and Judy for their help in the booth, getting ready before the show and packing up after.  Jerry helped with the set up and the pack up as well.  Thanks everyone for your support and eagerness to help.

Just a reminder that this coming week is a store wide sale15% off everything.  There are some kits and clearance patterns that are 50% off and all Quilting Fat Quarters will be 25% off.  On Saturday is our first Fall Swap & Shop.  Bring in donation items during the week as well as items to sell.  Come on Saturday 9am-noon for some great deals.  Pick what you want from the donated items and you decide what you want to pay.  All donations will go directly to Neighbourlink Calgary.

The only class we have starting this week is the Dresden Delight.  This is a simple pattern that can be used as a Placemat, table runner or even a full size quilt.  Class starts at 12:30 on Wednesday for one week only.

Next Week we have the Akasha Trunk and Fashion Show.  Come and see what Akasha Clothing is all about.  Cindy will explain her line and the fitting techniques she uses.  We’ll have discounts, draws and goodies.  Please call the store to tell us you are planning to come.  We want to make sure we have enough chairs (and goodies) for everyone!  A donation to the Gifts 4 Gals would be greatly appreciated.

Don’t forget to check the web site for all the details about the classes, the Swap & Shop and the Fashion Show.

    ·         OCTOBER 9 - - - AKASHA TRUNK AND FASHION SHOW.  Cindy will show us all that is and is new at Akasha Clothing.  She invites any previous students to come and model their outfits made from classes.  She will explain how the new Akasha patterns will include fitting before cutting steps for better fitting coats, jackets and dresses.  We’ll have great goodies and drinks.  Please bring a donation for the GIFTS 4 GALS (see our web site) and your admission is half price.  Pre-registration is not necessary, but appreciated.  We want to know how many chairs to set up….be it 4 or 40!  Enter the draw for some great prizes while you are here.

Many participants had trouble pricing the items they wanted to bring to the swaps we have had in June and they were donating the proceeds anyway….so we are trying a donation Swap & Shop.  We’ll have an area for items that are priced and an area for items that are un-priced.  When you pick up some items that are un-priced, all you need to do is put some cash in the jar.  You decide what the items are worth to you.   You can pay at the cash desk for the items that are priced.  We are also going to try a cash only process.  If you do find that you want to use a debit or credit card, we’ll tack on 50¢ so that we can donate as much as possible to Neighbourlink Calgary.  For information about Neighbourlink Calgary check out their web site…   www.neighbourlinkcalgary.ca

    Classes

    ·         Adult Beginner Sewing starts on Monday evening at 6:30pm.  There is still room for a couple more.  We try to keep the classes small so that all students have individual attention.

    ·        We have scheduled a lot of classes with Cindy Chambers the new owner of Akasha Clothing and a certified Palmer Pletsch instructor.  We hope that the combination of the classes we already offer, this will round things out nicely for more experienced sewers.  Check her list on the web site.  Cindy’s first scheduled date is on October 9 at 6:30pm.

    Akasha Trunk and Fashion Show

We want to see how many people we can squeeze into our space…all our furnishing are moveable, so we should be able to get lots of people in the store.  Cindy will use students and customers to show you what is new with Akasha.  She will explain her approach to fitting before cutting and let you try on any garments before you purchase any patterns.  We’ll have coffee and goodies available.  Bring a donation for Neighbourlink Calgary and your admission is half price. For information about Neighbourlink Calgary check out their web site…   www.neighbourlinkcalgary.ca Pre-registration is appreciated, but not necessary.

    ·         We have booked a Beginner Serger as well as a few other serger classes for Saturday afternoons this fall.  We don’t have kids scheduled for the afternoons in the hope that we can run some adult classes.  Let us know what you would like us to offer on Saturdays.

    ·         We have scheduled a Quilter’s Primer class for Monday evenings starting October 20.  This class will give you lots of great information.  We truly believe it is a very valuable course as you will learn (almost) all that you need to know to make many, many, many quilts!

    ·         Jane is returning with the Bra Making class and Cloning 101.  Both of these classes are great!  Learn to make a bra that fits!!!!!!  Learn how to copy ready made items so you can re-create your favorite clothing.

    ·         Our popular Free Motion Quilting classes are starting to fill, so we have scheduled a 2nd Beginner class for later in October.  We have dates also for the Feather and the Whole Cloth Quilt. Learn to finish your own masterpieces.

    Shop

    ·         The new Burda World of Fashion should be in by the end of the week.  If you want a copy, just give the store and shout and we’ll add your name to the hold list.  Speaking of the hold list, if we do call you, please let us know right away if you don’t want this issue.

    ·         We have a new fabric supplier….and have placed an order….so, should have more quilting fabric in the store by the end of the week.  We also ordered some more flannels, so they may be in the next shipment.

For those of you who pray, please pray for the son of friends….as I write, he is being fitted with new lungs!!!!!  http://donovanstransplantjourney.blogspot.com/

    Have a truly great week!

    September 5, 2008

We had a staff meeting this week.  We covered a lot of topics including Creative Stitches and a Fall Swap & Shop.

    1. Creative Stitches: we have a booth booked for the weekend of September 26 & 27 at the round up center.  It is the 13th annual festival and should be a good time.  We will take the Kwik Sew pattern cabinet and be there to promote our store and all the classes we have to offer.

    2. Fall Swap and Shop: we have been receiving a number of requests for a fall Swap & Shop.  We had left-over items in June and really want to get them into the hands of sewers and crafters who can use them.  We’ll have two options for you to participate in.  You can participate in one or both. You can register and bring in priced items (just like in June) or you can bring in un-priced items for donation.  Any un-priced item can be picked up, just make a donation for what you think the items are worth……More details can be found on the web site.   Almost forgot to tell you the date - - - Saturday, October 4; 9am-noon.

Kwik Sew: I was at the grocery store this week and bought a sewing magazine.  The cashier and I started talking and I was telling her about Needleworks and selling the Kwik Sew patterns.  She told me that she had sewn the same child’s sweat suit pattern 23 times.  As her children grew, she bought the next size up and made that 15 times!  She couldn’t  remember how many times she had used the same bathing suit pattern!!!!!  We’ll see Barbara at Needleworks soon I am sure!

Needlenews: We have updated the newsletter, but will have a more complete one ready next week.  I am waiting to hear from a couple of instructors about classes we want to book in the next few months.

Classes: Our fall slate of classes begin this Saturday.  We are excited about our KidSew as well as the adult classes.  We have planned an exciting program using the Easy Sewing the Kwik Sew Way book. This program has been designed for those who want to sew clothes for themselves, but don’t have the confidence to alter the pattern and make design changes.  We’ll start with a T-Shirt, move on to a blouse and then skirts and pants.  These classes are planned for the evenings, but as there is interest, we’ll plan for daytime classes. Check the web site for information about other classes we may be offering this fall.  Don’t forget to contact us if there is a class you are interested in. We appreciate your help in planning our classes.

Beginner Sewing Kits: we have made up packages filled with what we consider all sewers should have in their sewing kits. These are available at 15% off retail price.  We have also brought in some boxes and cases to keep everything nice and neat.

    Have a great week sewing.

    August 30, 2008

My thoughts are with all the parents who are sending their kids off to school on Tuesday.  For some of you it will be “Ya Hoo”, for others “Boo Hoo”.  There is always great excitement when September rolls around.  Although, by the calendar, we are just past the middle of the year, for most of us the year is just starting. We think of the year being the school year (September to June). Our activities begin again in the fall.  So, with that in mind….what are you going to start new this fall?

We have a number of sewing and quilting classes for you to join this fall.  We want to encourage you to learn something new.  How about learning to sew!  How about learning to sew with a new-to-you fabric?  How about learning how to use your new sewing machine?  How about learning to start or finish a quilt.  Our fall newsletter will be ready for next week….check the web site.  There is already lots for you to do right away.

Some of our plans are as follows.  These are classes that we would like to work into our schedule.  Call or email the store if you are interested.  Leave us your name, phone number and preferred time for the course and we’ll do our best to take your preferences into consideration as we plan.

    1. Beginner Serging: 3 lessons that will teach you to thread a serger, recognize and adjust for perfect tension, practice the different stitches your serger will do and make 3 little projects to show off your new skills!  We are looking at some Saturday afternoons or Monday evenings.

    2. Pant Drafting or Fitting: we have two options.  Learn to fit a commercial pant pattern, or learn how to draft from scratch.  Both classes will have you sewing the pants including waistbands and front fly zippers.

    3. Perfect Fit Blouse: Cindy (a certified Palmer & Pletsch instructor) will show you have to alter and fit the bust darts in a classic blouse.

    4. Jean Jacket: Learn to alter the pattern and sew a Jacket using a traditional styled pattern.

    5. Reversible or Asymmetrical Jacket: make a wardrobe favorite in any quilt cottons or fashion fabrics.  Pattern fitting is an important part of this class.

    6. Classic Skirt: Sew yourself a wardrobe basic.  Learn how to fit and sew an unlined skirt with back seam details and a waistband.

    7.   Quilter’s Primer: Sew a 6-block sampler quilt where you will learn how to use rotary cutting tools, sew accurate seams, sew pieced triangles, measure and add sashing and borders, quilt and bind!

    8. Machine Appliqué: There are a number of ways to appliqué using a sewing machine.  Learn the simple satin stitch appliqué or explore more options as you make a small wallhanging.

    9.  Artsy Bohemian Bag: Hermina taught this last year and we are considering this again to encourage you to use all those little bits and pieces in your sewing box (or room) left over from other projects.

    10. Free Motion Quilting – Whole Cloth Quilt: If you have taken the Free Motion Quilting class we offer and want to challenge yourself and learn more, this class will give you lots of opportunity to create and stitch patterns in a specific space.

    11. Fleece Jacket: now is the perfect time to sew yourself (or someone else) a fleece jacket for the fall.  Chose a pattern and fabric and come prepared to sew the jacket while learning how to sew pockets and zippers in fleece.

    12. Shelby Bag: I made a bag this summer. Shelby followed my instructions a made her own bag in our KidSew camp.  This is a great bag to show off a special fabric, some creative stitching, or piecing.  This bag is the perfect size for an everyday purse….just big enough for the wallet, keys, glasses, phone, etc without getting too heavy.

Treat Yourself Tuesday: We are considering a move to Fridays……what to call it we don’t know, but are thinking 2 Friday afternoon-evenings a month. Come and sew….we might even include supper!

The above are just a few of the things we would like to offer this year.  Your input is invaluable.

KidSew: Our class registration is on going.  Check the web site or call the store for class times available.

    June 13, 2008

I want to begin this week with a heartfelt thank you to Susan, Beverly, Heather and Grace who helped me out last Saturday at the Swap & Shop.  Jerry and I took off to Winnipeg to surprise my parents for their 50th Wedding Anniversary.  We are still working out the finances and have a few swappers left to pick up their leftovers and money.  Some swappers donated what didn’t sell.  We are thinking of having a mini fall swap.  We’ll let you know.

Our KidSew classes are winding down for the summer.  Any children who would like to come for a day (1 ½ hours) or two are welcome to call and register.  We have some spaces in many of our classes.  Just call.

We are taking registration for our summer KidSew camps.  The Sew Camp and Open Sew Camp in July are both full.  There are spaces in the Quilt and Open Quilt class, so we can fit a few Open Sewers in those classes if the dates better fit your summer schedule.  Call the store.  We still have some room in both of the Pre-KidSew classes in July.  We hadn’t planned any afternoon camps…but if the demand is there, we may be able to work something out.

Adult Summer Classes: We have just booked two new classes for the summer.

    ·         Postcard Fun: Regina took one look at my postcard and told me it needed a “focal point”.  Guess I’ll be sitting in on this class and learn how to make postcards the “right way”.  I have joined a swap and have received postcards from as far away as Ireland.  Theirs are much nicer than mine.  I am hoping Regina will give me lots of ideas to make my cards “artistic”.  Join us on Wednesday, July 9th at 6:30pm.

    ·         Stained Glass: Carol will teach this great technique that can be applied to all stained glass patterns.  Learn how to make your own bias tape and stitch it to the quilt for a great wall hanging.  Pattern is included.  Tuesday and Wednesday July 29 & 31; 10am-1pm

    ·         4-Patch Stack: Come for an evening of simple fun and play.  All you need is fabric, pins, your rotary cutting tools and sewing machine.  This simple technique creates a fabulous quilt.  We’ll discuss layout ideas as well. Wednesday, August 6, 6:30-9:30pm

    ·         Quilt as you go/Reversible Quilting: Learn how easy it is to sew blocks together in this great technique.  Carol will teach you how to cut and sew sashing strips for a totally reversible quilt.  Wednesday, August 13; 12:30-3:30pm.

    ·         Basic Skirt: Get a head start on your fall wardrobe.  A basic straight skirt never goes out of style.  Make it casual to go with your jean jacket or fancy to wear to a wedding….or back to work.  Cindy will help you alter the pattern and provide construction tips along the way.  The pattern is included.  Thursday, August 14; 5:30-9:3pm

    May 27, 2008

We had a chilly, rainy weekend at the Festival of Quilts at Heritage Park this past weekend.  The park is usually covered with many, many quilts….but, this year, they were on display inside many of the buildings and tents.  There was still a good turn-out and the quilts were beautiful.  We ended up with 16 of our kid’s quilts on display.  All our girls should be very proud of themselves for their efforts.

Congratulations to Shirley Carlson for winning the Pieced Jacket Challenge at the show.  Other customers entered the Quilt Challenge, but unfortunately, my single votes didn’t count enough for them to win!

We have added a lot of new names to our mailing list.  Welcome.  Congratulations to Helen Lawrence for winning our gift certificate draw!!!!!  Your gift certificate is waiting for you at the store.

We have just received some new quilting fabrics.  Beautiful floral prints.  They all coordinate for a wonderful quilted project…..I think the FQ to Fun Bags  or 4-Patch Stacks class would be a super way to show off these fabrics.  We also received the soy/cotton batting.  If you haven’t been in just to run your hands over it, it is super soft and very lightweight. It is also very nice to work with.

We have a few leftovers from our booth at the Festival of Quilts Merchant’s Mall.  Tutto, Machines on Wheels are a great wheeled sewing machine case.  The cases fold up to only 3” deep when not in use and I have been using and abusing mine for a year now and love it.  We have a few left and will offer a 10% discount on the price.  We also ordered, but didn’t receive until yesterday some great little machine lights.  Come in and see this powerful LED work lamp.  We’ll offer them also at 10%.

June 7th is our 3rd Swap & Shop.

Register soon, but don’t forget to come and shop.  Lots of great deals in fabrics, patterns, books, magazines and notions.  Who knows maybe someone is getting rid of something you are looking for.  10% of all sales will be donated to Neighbourlink Calgary.

Fall Classes: I can’t believe I am even bringing up the subject….but we have had some requests for the details of our KidSew classes in the fall.  I will be sending out a survey to all involved families, but any comments or suggestions now would be helpful.  We are always eager to know how we are doing in any of our classes (kids and adults), and your feedback is truly appreciated.  So, with thinking caps on over the next few months, drop us a line and let us know how we are doing….what we can do to make things better….what really drives you nuts about sewing classes (come on, everyone has a little something that makes them grind their teeth!).  We want Needleworks to be the place for people to go for any sewing instruction or help!!!!  You are instrumental in making us a success!  Thanks.

    May 3, 2008

I was away for a much deserved (I think I deserved it!) week of sewing.  Every spring and fall I try to join other members of Alberta Handicrafts Guild Quilt Group at Quilt Camp at Sylvan Lake .  We sew, eat, sew, eat, shop, eat, sew….and a little bit of sleep!  We had our largest group this year.  40 ladies accomplished lots and I certainly got lots done too…..I was able to start 1 quilt, get another quilt top to the final border (I didn’t bring enough fabric) and get a quilt top finished, layered and half quilted!  I also sewed some clothes----skirt, pants, shirt, vest, 4 t-shirts!  I also read 2 books!  I didn’t go shopping….I think I barely stepped outside of the building, I was sewing so much!  But I am now back and raring to go!!!

May and June is presently quiet regarding classes.   We are finishing a few up (Blouse, Quilter’s Primer) and will start some new ones in the coming weeks.  We will have a booth at the Festival of Quilts.  So, come and visit Heritage Park , May 24 & 25.  See lots (600) quilts all over the park.  Take a few rides….the boat on the reservoir, the Ferris wheel. Have lunch at the Wainwright Hotel and drop into the Merchant’s Mall and have a visit.  We’ll be taking all our Wonderfil threads with us and promoting our classes and other products in store.

We have been doing an increasing number of “group” classes.  If you are part of a sewing or quilting group and would like to book a class with us, we can usually accommodate you.  Just call the store and talk to us about a class just for you and your friends.  We offer a discount on registration for 5 or more in the class.

The dates for the Summer KidSew Camps are posted on the web site.  We are taking registrations now.  We again are planning some half day/one day classes for adults during the summer.  Let us know what you are looking for in terms of classes and we’ll do our best to schedule them for you.

    April 19, 2008

Snow in April!  I have lived in the Calgary area since 1982 and am used to a snow fall every month of the year.  Why am I not surprised? I guess I should have placed that order for fleece a while ago!!!!  Last week, I asked parents to check their winter coat situations.  I have a pink, size 8 snow parka and grey, size 9-11 fleece duffle coat.  They will be missed at some time, and I would rather they be returned to their rightful homes.

We received a back order of half a dozen Island Batiks.  We also received some of the Cotton Time Twill.  We use the Goodtime Twill (cotton/poly blend) for the tote bags in the kids classes and it’s also great for pants and jackets.  We have a few of the 100% cotton twills now as well.

The new KWIK SEW catalogue is in with some lovely new patterns.  Check them out at the store, or go on-line at kwiksew.com and browse.   Call the store and we can pull the patterns for you and even mail them if you want.   I finally found a pattern for a blouse with a v-neckline collar that I am looking forward to making for myself.

Festival of Quilts….we received registration forms for 15 kid’s quilts that will be on display at the Festival of Quilts at Heritage Park , May 24 & 25.  Mark this date to visit the park and see over 500 quilts and quilted items.  If you have never been to the Festival of Quilts, it is a real eye opener.  The park has quilts hanging everywhere!!!!!  Don’t forget that if you have registered a quilt through me, I need them at the store by May 17 so that I can take them to the park.  I’ll also bring them back to the store for pick up after the show.

Treat Yourself Tuesday: don’t forget these afternoons (1-4pm) of sewing and chatting.  It is becoming an informal instruction time….so, feel free to drop by and get some help with any sewing related project.  Only $8 for the 3 hours and coffee/tea and cookies are provided.

    Have a great week sewing.

    April 5, 2008

I think I have recovered from our busy spring break week.  We had 12 lovely ladies work very hard on their quilts.  A few more have been completed.  I will try my best to get them posted to the web site this weekend.  Many of the children have agreed to allow me to take their quilts to the Festival of Quilts at Heritage Park in May.  We have also requested that any of their other quilting projects be shown as well.  I am excited that we can help create a display of work our younger sewers. This is not restricted to kid’s quilts.

If you have done any quilting at Needleworks , we encourage you to participate in Western Canada ’s Largest Outdoor Quilt Show.  Many comment that they aren’t good enough!  Nonsense!  We were all beginners at some point.  For some of us, the completion of our quilts is a major accomplishment!  Show off your skills and encourage others to do the same.  I think that if we all just show the “perfect” work we do, we discourage others from trying because they can’t be as good as ours.  Be proud, show off your work!  ……getting off my soap box now!

Classes: We have four classes scheduled to begin this week.

T-Shirt: With summer fast approaching (I write with 3” of snow on the ground!!!) why not work on a wardrobe basic?  Chose a simple T-Shirt pattern and learn how to make minor adjustments and sew with knits on your sewing machine or serger.  Monday, April 7 & 14; 6:30-9:30pm

    ·         Photo Transfer Work Day: If you have attended Margaret’s informational talk about Photo Transfer, then this time is perfect to come and work on your own projects.  Margaret will help you use software, printers and fabric as you create some lovely artwork on fabric. Tuesday, April 8; 4-9pm

    ·         Quilter’s Primer: Learn almost all you need to know about quilting in this 6 block sampler class.  Learn how to cut and sew accurately, press properly and make 6 blocks with sashing and borders.  Students will also learn how to layer, quilt and bind their quilts.  Wednesday, Apirl 9, 15, 23, May 7 & 14; 6:30-9:30pm

    ·         Cover Hem Sergers: A class for those with sergers that do the cover hem stitch.  Learn how to thread your machine, start and stop stitching and make a simple project to show off your work.  Thursday, April 10: 12:30-3:30pm

    January 19, 2008

A lovely snowy winter weekend to everyone.  Makes me want to either stay in bed and read a good book, or get up and sew something warm.  I do have a few quilts I want to get done....so maybe I'll spend Sunday afternoon on that task.

Burda magazines have come in and flown out the door.  We have ordered a few more each month and the extra January issues should arrive this week.  Before we know it, the February ones will be in as well.  If we are holding one for you, please pick it up as soon as possible.  We'll put them back on the shelf if we don't hear from you in the next day or two.

Kwik Sew sent a new catalogue this week and 25 new patterns.  The new patterns are on display in the magazine rack....We receive one of each new release and as soon as it sells, or if we think it will go fast, we'll order more.  We are going to try to place a Kwik Sew order each week (Tuesday) so that we never really run out of patterns.

New quilting cottons should be in this week.  Unfortunately, when we place an order to be delivered in 2-3 months, some of it get sold out and is back ordered....so we never really know what we get when the orders come in.  We do have an order for the cotton/poly batting that should arrive soon.
