About Us

Since opening the doors of Needleworks in November 2005, I have had people in to visit, and they hadn’t realized who owned and operated Needleworks….so, I thought I would take the opportunity to introduce myself.

Needleworks is owned and operated by Allison Spence. My husband and two daughters are fully supportive and you’ve probably met one or all of them when you have been to the store. They have spent a lot of time helping out and doing jobs that I just haven’t found time for. My parents have also traveled from Winnipeg to help us get ready to open the store. They travel back and forth a couple of times each year and have been a wonderful help at Needleworks.  .

I have a Bachelor of Education from the University of Winnipeg. I have always said that I didn’t learn to teach at university...but through years of teaching swimming. I remember very clearly writing, teaching and evaluating lesson plans for my swimming instructor certificate. In addition to teaching swimming for the Canadian Red Cross, I have taught CPR, and lifeguarding classes. I have taught school (Junior High Science) and now chose to teach sewing. I have taught sewing and quilting classes for over 13 years in and around Calgary. During that time I also sold sewing machines and sergers and am knowledgeable about both.

In addition to being an avid reader of anything thrilling or mysterious, I love to sew, quilt, knit, crochet and embroider. At the moment I seem to be knitting lots of socks but hope to graduate and finish a sweater or two this year....I finished my KoolAid sweater in April 2007!

I am a member of Alberta Handicrafts Guild, Calgary Branch, Quilt and Needlework Groups. I have served this group in a number of capacities and am currently the past-president of the Calgary Branch. I sing in the church choir and my husband and I are active participants in the life of the congregation at Thornhill Baptist Church.
